It’s Not An Act

“A magic act?” Lucinda paused, the lit match in her hand burning down as she stared at Katelyn, “You mean someone on this world can actually cast magic?”
Katelyn nodded, her red hair bouncing around her shoulders, “Yeah, the school hired him to perform at an assembly. I was wondering if you would be interested in coming.”
Lucinda frowned and lit the cigarette, which had formerly been some nosey woman who had had the nerve to tell her not to smoke, “I find that hard to believe. I haven’t sensed magic in anyone on this world.”
Katelyn frowned, but then smiled, “Well, maybe they are using forms of magic you can’t detect.”
Lucinda took a long drag on the cigarette, almost hearing the woman scream as her body and soul were slowly burned away, “I doubt that.”
Katelyn frowned, “I just thought you might like to come along. If you don’t—”
Lucinda turned to her friend, pulling the cigarette holder away from her lips, granting the transformed woman a few seconds of respite, “I never said I didn’t want to go.” She watched Katelyn smile, “But I have my doubts as to what magic will be in this show.”
Katelyn managed a smile, unsure how to respond, “Well… it’s tomorrow, so you’ll have to come with me to school. I don’t think the teachers will mind if I bring you with me.”
Lucinda nodded, thinking about all the things she could turn a teacher into, “No, I don’t think they will either.”

The assembly hall was a bit too crowded for Lucinda’s tastes. The fact that there were other people rubbing up against her was pushing her farther than she had ever wanted to be pushed, but Millicent had overheard her conversation with Katelyn the night before and had made her promise to, at the very least, make sure Katelyn was not expelled because she had been brought along. So far, she had only taken her frustration out on a janitor while no one was watching, and, as a pile of ashes lying on the floor, he would not be telling anyone about it.
She sat, arms clenched to her sides in the uncomfortable fold-down chair with two giggling idiots on either side. If it were not for Katelyn’s begging, they probably would have been toad mucus by now. She had long ago decided that if the show were not truly worthy of the indignities she had already suffered through to see it, she would blast the mage into a dimension of hell. She was focused on figuring out which one when the lumpy human that ran the school walked onto the stage.
“Now students, I’d like you all to quiet down.” The principal waited for quiet, frowning after a minute when the teachers had to start hushing certain students, “Today we have a very special guest, I would like to present to you, Malnor the Magician!” He stood to the side, sweeping out his arm as a tall man in a black suit and top hat walked onto the stage, accompanied by a woman that most men would probably drool over.
Lucinda watched on quietly, barely reserving judgment as she watched him take off his hat and release a pair of doves that he had concealed from view. The audience gasped in wonderment while Lucinda began to twitch.
“Thank you so very much for inviting me here today.” He said, standing up with a flourish, “It’s so wonderful to be here.”
His assistant walked up to him wheeling over a podium. He nodded to her, “I am Malnor the Magnificent, and this is my assistant, the beautiful Belinda.”
Lucinda’s twitching became slightly more rapid.
“For my first trick, I would like to show you how I make this simple glass of milk disappear.” He began to pour a milk from one cup to another, then placed one of the cups down and poured the milk into it, only to have it never reach the bottom, disappearing at the bottom and into thin air. A few of the people in the audience members clapped but Lucinda stared, although her eyes were not quite perfect, she knew that he had not merely made the milk ‘disappear’. She reached out magically, finding the milk inside the podium, in another glass. She grimaced, watching as the magician began to make a wand, a mere painted stick to be truthful, ‘disappear’ as well.
His tricks were beginning to become more and more obvious to Lucinda as time went on: handkerchiefs up his sleeve, making things ‘disappear’ and ‘reappear’, pulling a rabbit out of his hat. Even though she was having trouble seeing them from where she was, she could sense magically exactly what he was doing. He began to bow even more flashily while the crowd cheered. Lucinda slowly rose from her seat, ready to blast the man into a particularly awful dimension of hell, but Katelyn reached out and grabbed her hand, “Wait! Lucinda, you’re going to miss the best part.”
Lucinda glared at her hand for a moment, but restrained herself, pulling herself free, “Best part? This man is a fraud, he’s not doing magic at all,” She hissed, frustrated beyond measure, “And what have I told you about touching?”
Katelyn recoiled, “I-I’m sorry about touching you, but didn’t you hear? He’s going to saw his assistant in half…”
Lucinda stopped, looking to the stage as he began showily flapping around a saw. She perked an eyebrow, and then slowly sat down, “Not magic… but I may find this amusing…” She clasped her hands together, leaning forward in her chair to get a better view.
His assistant slipped into the box and instantly Lucinda knew something was wrong. Although the feet on the end of the box were wiggling, she could sense that those were not living feet. No, it was just another illusion. She watched, her ire growing more and more intense as he showily cut through the box. He pulled the box apart, and she stood up, pointing her finger out at him, her face a mask of rage, “CHARLATAN!” The entire room shook with the sound and all eyes went to her. She glared, stepping over the people in the aisle, making her way to the stage. One of the teachers clamored to block her path, but with a mere gesture, she hurled him through the air and into the wall. She walked past his crumpled form as others rushed to his side. The rug skittered beneath her feet, magic emanating from her being.
Katelyn was quickly chasing after her, “Lucinda wait! You-you can’t hurt them. I’m sure that this is all just a big misunderstanding…” She stopped, unwilling to physically stop the girl while she was so angry. She looked around nervously, “D-Don’t anyone try to get in her way.” It was an empty warning, as most of the people were glued to their seats, watching Lucinda as she walked past them to the stage.
Malnor was staring at the child, unsure what to say or do. There… had to be an explanation for what happened to the teacher. Had he been set up? No, this was a school… they had hired him before; they would not try to ruin the children’s entertainment. A rival? He scowled; he would not put it past a few of them, but he saw no one he knew, and the child was moving alone, save an apparent friend who was trying to stop her.
Belinda had crawled out of the box, and was standing behind him, as if to use him as a shield. “What the hell just happened?”
“I don’t know. I think someone is trying to embarrass me.”
She stared at him, “In front of children? I can’t see anyone stooping that low.”
He frowned, watching as the girl reached the small staircase to the stage, “I can think of a few.” He managed a smile and walked towards the child, “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name…”
She glared at him, “I am Princess Lucinda of Bruja, Dark enchantress, lady of the southern isles. And I will not allow these mockeries of magic continue.”
Ah, now it all made sense. Malnor knelt down to look her in the face, smiling weakly, “I’m sorry Lucinda. I didn’t mean to disappoint you with my act.”
Her eyes narrowed on him and he shuddered, a chill running down his spine, “You are trying to patronize me?” She seethed with anger, “You are trying to patronize me?”
The air seemed to be filled with an electric charge and Malnor stood up, backing away from the child. He swallowed nervously, “N-now just take it easy…” He felt himself begin to float around in the air, and heard Belinda scream. He twirled around in air, trying to find some sort of hold, but none was there, he was floating, actually floating, no strings, no wires, nothing attached to him, truly floating in air. He felt queasy as he spiraled about in the air, “L-let me down!”
“You dare command me?” She growled, “First you claim that farce was true magic, and now, now you have the gall to command me?”
He barely managed to squeak out his response, “P-Please?”
“Lucinda please…” Katelyn froze in place, watching as her friend turned around and looked at her, the breath escaped from her lungs and she nodded slowly, “I-I think…” Her mouth continued to move, but no words could come out. She smiled, “I’ll be back here…”
Lucinda watched her friend walk away before looking back at Malnor, who was covering his mouth, trying to keep himself from vomiting. She growled, hurling them him back onto the stage. He groaned, trying to rise, but seeing the girl looming over him. He body froze, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry, I didn’t know!”
Lucinda stared down at the little man, “This entire time, I’ve been wondering which dimension of hell I was going to send you to.”
He paled, terrified, “N-no… please…”
Lucinda smiled, crouching down at his side, “I decided against sending you to a dimension of hell.” Her cold smile grew, “I thought of a far more fitting punishment.” He whimpered, watching as his hat appeared in her hands. He swallowed nervously, turning over and beginning to back away as she searched into the impossible darkness. Sounds echoed from within, beyond description, screams and howling, unearthly wails of torture and torment. He scrambled to his feet, beginning to run away as she pulled her arm back out, he had to get away, he had to run, he had to get away from her…
Gray and slimy flesh was held to Lucinda’s hand as she began to pull out the horror, the audience screamed in terror as the bestial horror began to climb through the rift she had opened, its impossible size fitting through the miniscule hat with ease. It sloughed through the top, its weight falling upon the stage and sundering the wooden planks. Malnor turned back to see the horror, its tentacles reaching out through the air towards him. He shrieked in terror, turning around and trying to run as one of the slimy tentacles wrapped around his shoulder. He grabbed at it, struggling to free himself, only to feel another one wrap around his leg.
Lucinda watched, smiling as she began to push the being back into its dimension. The audience was screaming in terror, but the doors had shut themselves, locking and keeping the audience inside for the performance. Malnor’s screams echoed throughout the room, tears spilling from his eyes as he was drawn closer and closer to the gaping maw of the creature. The fetid stench of death and decay washing over him as the creature opened up its fanged, funnel shaped mouth.
Most of the creature was already back inside when Malnor’s feet were finally drawn into the monster’s mouth. A terrible wail echoed from the man as the abomination’s teeth bit into his legs. He clawed against the floor, trying to find a hold, but there was nothing, no place to him to clutch, no way for him to escape. He screamed again, beginning to be lifted into the air as he too, was drawn into the hat. Lucinda twirled the hat around, letting it rest on the ground, watching as he clawed through the air, the tentacles covering him. He looked at her a final time, sheer horror written upon his face, before sinking into the blackness. His hand grabbed the edge of the hat, holding for a moment before finally being wrenched away.
Lucinda took a step back, slowly turning to face the assistant, “And you…” The woman whimpered, pitifully, “You assisted him with this farce.”
Tears streamed down from the girl’s face, “Please, I beg you… I just took this job so I could pay for bills, I never even believed in magic!”
“Quiet your filthy tongue.” Lucinda murmured, and the woman’s mouth disappeared. Lucinda stared at the girl; her anger still dimmed only slightly, “You were his plaything.” She snorted derisively, “And a plaything you shall remain.” With a wave of her hand, the girl disappeared; a bunny in the assistant’s outfit replacing her. She slowly lowered the bunny to herself, looking at the animal, which still retained its human mind, “Enjoy yourself, you’re going to be in this form for the rest of your life.”
Lucinda turned back to the terrified audience, watching as they trembled before her. She smiled for a moment, finally basking in the respect she was so dearly owed. She looked to Katelyn, who was sitting against a wall, whimpering. Her smile faded and she sighed heavily, no, this would not do. She snapped her fingers and everything changed, all the damage done to the stage was repaired, the students and staff returned to their seats, save the still injured teacher who was clutching his side.
Katelyn blinked, “What?” She looked around, her face quickly growing flush, as she saw the audience watching her and Lucinda intently, “Lu-Lucinda, what are we doing up here? What happened? Everyone’s watching us…”
Lucinda turned to her, “I’m going to put on a magic show, a real magic show.” She looked back to the audience, “Although these fools don’t deserve it in the least, the name of magic doesn’t deserve to be sullied by fools who believe it is mere sleight of hand.”
Katelyn looked at her confused, “What? I thought they hired someone to…”
Lucinda leaned down and picked the hat up from the floor, then pulled an oddly clothed rabbit from it, handing it to her friend, “Here, have a bunny.”
Katelyn blinked, staring for a moment before taking the bunny and holding it. She looked down at it for a moment, then smiled back at Lucinda, “Thanks.”
Lucinda returned the smile, “Its name is Belinda. You practice magic on it.” Katelyn looked more confused but Lucinda’s smile widened, “Don’t worry, I’ll explain later. Now get back to a seat, so I can begin.”
Katelyn nodded, holding Belinda the bunny closely, and ran back to her seat, while Lucinda began a show that none of the students would ever forget…
